The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is a one year ACGME-accredited subspecialty fellowship program within the Division of Cardiology at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C. We recruit two fellows for advanced training annually. The fellows receive their training in cardiac catheterization laboratory at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Maryland.
The patient population in the above mentioned centers provides a broad exposure to a wide range of acute and chronic cardiovascular disorders. The interventional fellows receive high quality training in performing the following procedures: complex coronary interventions in acute coronary syndrome and stable coronary disease, endovascular management of the peripheral arterial disease, percutaneous management of structural heart diseases, including transfemoral arotic valve replacement (TAVR), Mitral Clip, patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD) closures, valvuloplasties, percutaneous ventricular assist devices, right heart catheterizations, and endomyocardial biopsies. The fellows participate in STEMI call cover age at George Washington University Hospital primary PCI center, and are required to attend the weekly cardiac catheterization conference on Monday mornings to review and discuss the indications, and complications of complex coronary, peripheral and structural cases. The interventional fellows perform all the procedures with direct supervision of the faculty members, with constant evaluation and constructive feedback. The fellows develop and meet the ACGME core competencies in the clinical knowledge, procedural skills, clinical judgment, professionalism, and interpersonal skills and qualify to participate in the ABIM interventional cardiology board examination.
The applicant should be a graduate candidate of an ACGME-accredited program in cardiovascular medicine, and cardiology board-certified/board-eligible. Starting in July 2024, we will be accepting applications through ERAS, Electronic Residency Application Service for fellows to begin training July 2025.
