I am pleased to welcome you to the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. We are located within a very diverse community in Northwest Washington DC. We pride ourselves in being a small, close-knit fellowship program in which our fellows spend more than 90% of their training at the George Washington (GW) Hospital. As a result, the fellows are available for daily conferences, rotations, ambulatory clinics and mentoring. Our fellowship features one-on-one teaching in which you are paired with a faculty mentor on a daily basis. We also pride ourselves on our flexible scheduling in which each fellow meets with the program director to design a schedule which meets their specific needs.
The cardiology program at GW continues to grow. We have hired several new faculty members this year and our Division of Cardiology currently consists of 17 full-time faculty. The clinical rotations at GW include time in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, the arrhythmia service, cardiac consultations, coronary care unit, vascular medicine and multi-modality imaging including echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT. Fellows will also rotate with our colleagues at Inova Fairfax Hospital for rotations in acute decompensated heart failure, cardiac transplantation, adult congenital heart disease and cardiac rehabilitation. Fellows will also spend one half day per week at the Ambulatory Care Center at GW in their own Ambulatory Continuity Clinic. Our robust conference schedule includes a weekly cardiac catheterization conference, fellow’s didactic conference, journal club, non-invasive conference, arrhythmia conference, heart failure conference, cardiology board review and cardiology grand rounds.
Our Interventional Cardiology program consists of a robust program in coronary and peripheral interventions, with additional programs in percutaneous atrial and ventricular septal defect closures, new short-term ventricular support devices and percutaneous valve placement. Our Heart Rhythm services are distinguished nationally by their focus on complex ablative procedures and implantable cardiac devices. Our non-invasive cardiac laboratory consists of state-of-the-art echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT. The clinical program in heart failure, transplantation, and pulmonary hypertension is one of the largest and most successful in the region with internationally recognized faculty in the field. Additionally, we have a number of faculty members with a dedicated interest in health policy.
The fellowship training program is highly competitive. We have advanced training tracks in Interventional Cardiology and Clinical Electrophysiology for all interested fellows. Some alumni of our program have also completed MPH and MBA advanced degrees during their fellowship training. All fellows have produced scholarly activity that is typically presented at national and regional forums with publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals. The division has highly active clinical and basic science research platforms with distinction in the areas of arrhythmia, heart failure, primary prevention and health policy. We are grateful to our community of colleagues, our alumni network, and our fellows for propelling us to these heights.
Sincerely,
Allen J. Solomon, MD
