Hidradenitis Suppurativa Project

Research Question: How do hidradenitis suppurativa wounds differ from chronic wounds?
Significance Aims
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent, inflammatory disease for which there is currently no known treatment or cure
  • Prevalence in HS ranges from 1-4% in young adults making it more common than other better recognized immune diseases
  • Women are more commonly affected than men and the disease is more common in African Americans
  • To understand the inflammatory response in HS compared to chronic wounds
  • To investigate the interplay between the microbiome and host immune response in HS
  • To improve understanding of the mechanisms and pathogenesis of HS so that novel therapeutic targets can be identified for drug development
